Joe,

You are correct - there are many that do try to follow the RFC's, some that
add to it (AOL rDNS) comes to mind, SPF OMG type stuff, some whom believe
that the world can spin without them, and some that really are clueless what
it's for.  Some of the RFC's are tough to digest and understand but IMHO I
do believe they are necessary as additional tools, to help an admin diagnose
different concerns, for example with email servers.  

Most email server software comes with a pretty much set it and forget it
type of core installation and configuration.  No need to monkey with the
default SMTP port, unless you've got reason, etc. or even the hold states
upon a 220 connect.  Point is the RFC's are needed so that everyone W3 wide
sings off the same sheets of music.

Maybe a condensed versioning / base line of an RFC would be nice, ie: a
summary that hits the most common, must have, requirements in order to work.
