I am running 7.13 with Killer Webmail with the latest patches on a W2k sp 3
(installed 4.0 as I type) with 512megs of memory. The box has been running
great for over a year now. Today a couple time during the day the CPU
spiked at 100% ...

That is normal, but:

... and box stopped responding to SMTP and web request, it still
processed pop and imap.

This is not.

Are you running a lot of 16-bit processes on the server? Some servers have a serious problem with too many 16-bit processes.

When this next happens, go to Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click the "CPU" button. This will sort the processes by CPU usage, and show which process(es) are using up the CPU time, which may help narrow down the cause.
