I assume Bagle.j is somewhat dynamic, so although McAfee say they can detect is, mine hasn't, because it can only detect it once decrypted.
clamav is a free open-source virus scanner, I have it running on my qmail mail server, and it updates its virus definition database once an hour.
It scans e-mail as it arrives, and if a virus is detected, I have it set up to reject the e-mail at the SMTP level before it accepts it so it doesn't bounce mail to bogus addresses. I haven't received one Bagle.j virus.
