My understanding is that, although having the server protected is very important, it can't catch all of the incoming emails with viruses attached. This makes sense, though, since these files are compressed. It would have to open the email file, recognize the virus as an attachment, then reassemble. Doing this with every message would be a massive undertaking, even for a small to modest size email server.
That's why it's also important to have the antivirus on the client side, as well as educating users not to open unexpected attachments and anything executable, period. Dennis T.
