I concur, we are running IMail on a stand-alone machine in our network.
We've never encountered a problem of any kind.

IMail does NOT HAVE to be installed on a DC.  Ours is installed on a MSCS
cluster - one of which is a DC, the other is not.

Huh? Since when does it have to be a DC? Why can't it be a member server
anymore?
