I have a customer that is sending to a user at the Comcast domain. When I - or the customer - send to this user from the customer's account, we get a bounce saying unknown user. However, the Comcast user says he's getting mail from other folks just fine. Also, when I send to him using a different mail server the message seems to go through. Below is the log excerpt from one transaction. Notice Comcast responds with a "550 [PERMFAIL] comcast.net requires valid sender" even though the sender and the recipient addresses are both valid. Any ideas? I know 550 is generally a relay issue but I don't see what is invalid about this. Of course Comcast is telling the user that the mail is never even reaching their server. Go figure.

First, the "Unknown user" is the standard IMail message for "Something went wrong with the delivery of the E-mail -- check the log file for details".

The problem with this is:

20040314 110650 127.0.0.1 SMTP (0CF07C24) >MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
...
20040314 110650 127.0.0.1 SMTP (0CF07C24) 550 [PERMFAIL] comcast.net requires valid sender

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/[EMAIL PROTECTED] shows that that E-mail address doesn't exist. Further examination shows that the domain theprofessionalrealtors.com doesn't exist. Since the domain does not exist, comcast (appropriately) rejects the E-mail.
