Here is what worked for us last night. 1. stop the mail server. 2. search the user mail directories for old lock files *.~mbx and delete them. 3. Search your log file for "Fatal error - shutdown started" and note the message number. 4. Move those messages to another directory. 5. Open those messages in notepad and note the local address that they were to be delivered to. 6. Visit that local user's mail directory and delete any nested/sub folders.
Start the smtp a queuemgr services, then watch them from the services.msc (refreshing frequently). Repeat as necessary until you have found all of the problem users. Apparently, 8.1 has some kind of weird problem with some nested folders.
