Re: the .mbx file - you are 100% correct. Or course, that's only if the virus isn't caught at the file level before it's incorporated into the .mbx, and the .mbx is subsequently scanned after the virus definitions are updated. It happens only Very rarely these days but yes, I'll concede it DOES happen.

Can't this happen with other mailserver virus scanners (in fact, I've seen it happen!).

Actually, in theory it should be impossible with almost all mailserver virus scanner implementations (there is only 1 mailserver AV program that I know of that could have this flaw). I can definitely say that Declude Virus doesn't have this flaw. :)

To be an improvement, a dedicated anti-virus solution has to have a way to deal with the **infected part** of the .mbx. If it can't, the .mbx does has to be quarantined or deleted, no?

Mailserver AV programs don't normally work that way. In almost all cases, they scan the E-mail before it is mixed in with other E-mail. If they *do* scan the E-mail after it is mixed in with other E-mail, they presumably have a way of identifying the individual E-mail(s) with viruses.

In practice, what I'm doing is working pretty well.

Slow responses have not proven to be a problem of any kind.

If you have the right combination of on-access virus scanner, setup, volume of mail, etc., and don't mind the drawbacks, it can work for you. But remember, there is a reason why Norton charges $25+ for the desktop virus scanner and $2,500+ for the mailserver virus scanner.
