Is there something going on that I am not aware of about email messages? I
am getting some failed, delayed messages in my logs for a couple of domains
we host, one of which is my own. What causes this and what can I do about
it?

Indeed, this is the expected setup.

Yes:  create  views  based  on the extra column and point IMail to the view
name.
