That may be part of it.  There is also a link on the readmail.#####.cgi
page that allows a forced recheck of mail which states (paraphrased)
"Check for new mail ... auto-check every 5 minutes."  There is no
specific readmail.cgi file and the code isn't in readmail.html.  Oh,
well, the search continues.

The auto-check is done with HTML, eg in msgsum.html (I'm using Classic
Webmail, but others should be similar) you'll find:
        <META HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" CONTENT="300">

It appears to be in the templates statically rather than as a
configurable setting, so removing that tag will disable the
auto-refresh, and changing the number will change the time between
refreshes.

Note that I haven't gone searching through the files for everywhere it
might be done, but this should get you started.
