I think if you rely on phrase filters and smtp control access (as I do), then you are seeing an increase. I open the some of the spam to try and find phrases I can filter out but those spammers are getting sneakier - the emails are short and to the point - and many don't use phrases we can safely filter. I downloaded the phraselist on IPSwitch's site and have since added many of my own phrases. It stops quite a bit and I get very, very few false positives... but we are pretty low volume compared to most of the list folks.
