You'll be complying with Internet standards. :) Refusing null senders generally doesn't block a great deal of spam, but it does qualify you for listing at www.rfc-ignorant.org, as well as breaking legitimate functionality like you noticed. The null sender has been written into the specs since the beginning for exactly this sort of stuff -- messages which come from automated processes and must not be automatically responded to (for loop prevention reasons). That includes all delivery status notifications like read receipts and bounce messages.
