Interesting. We're not even doing virus/spam scanning on that box, as the messages are relayed through another system which does, first.

Unfortunately, that isn't possible (well, it might be technically possible, but would be very difficult to implement).
OK, will leave that investigation for another day. Am in the process of setting up SquirrelMail on another server as a temporary measure. Can't do user/alias administration, but at least the IMail mailboxes will be available over IMAP - it seems to be fast.
