When the server begins to slow down on responding.  For instance, when
things get really ugly, and I telnet into the postfix server on port 25, it
can take up to ten seconds to get a response.

ok, that's detailed e symptom. the limit is the disk i/o, so add an Promise UltraATA 133 controller and ata133 disk and have postfix use that for queueing. you can always use the controller/disk in another box if you have to upgrade. Your old 233 MHz cpu board probably has only an ata33 or 66 channel, so it's stupid to put an ata133 disk on that.


you need to watch swapping (should have no swapping), so keep memory available.
