Len and Russ,
Encouraged by your detailed reports, I implemented a pilot installation with just a few maildomains, using an external SMTP relay capable of greylisting. It works well, users already start to complain about missing spam... :-) Here is the report for yesterday:
Report of Monday, 08/30/2004 Total new mails: 7539 Total denied mails: 7213 Total accepted mails: 326
Of course, the accepted mails are still processed by the well-established antispam / antivirus filters of IMail and Declude.
As it looks right now, we are going to implement greylisting for all our maildomains when the pilot phase is over. It seems to be the next best thing to do until the quibble over SPF and its derivatives is over. I hope that some feasible DNS-based mail authorisation standard will evolve and is implemented soon.
Thanks again for the encouragement. It's good to "eat over the fence" now and then.
Marius
