I am running 8.05, and have not been able to apply any patches for some time. The error I get is : "Old file not found

This is my proposed solution - please tell me if I am going to kill my server. 1. Stop IMail services. 2. Back up the IMail folders to another location (*x). 3. Make a copy of the registry. 4. Un install IMail. 5. Remove all registry entries. 6. Install 8.10 (disabling the services) 7. Install patches 8. Merge old registry file 9. Copy the users directory from *x. 10 Cross fingers and start the IMail services.
Will this work?
