RAID5 or RAID1? if your are really disk bound, then RAID1 will be faster.

about 40,000-80,000 messages per day

accepted or rejected?

if anyone knew of a workaround other than upgrading the server to a new machine with faster processors.

queue manager better be disk-bound, not CPU bound.

Any help would be appreciated

yawn. Usual Supects: bad partitioning, badly fragged, no removal of stale/unused files from the spool partition. Check the list archives for this long dead-horse.

Cheap and quick with very probably extremely pleasant results: slip in a cheap Promise UltraATA 133 controller and a 7200 RPM/8MB-cache ATA100+ disk, and dedicate that disk subsystem to the mail spool. Probably under $100 and 1 hour "just to see".
