You don't have to install smartermail on the same server though. The conversion tool must be run on the Imail server but you can specify a UNC path or mapped drive for the Smartermail server to convert to. That was initially a concern for me as I didn't want to install another mail server on my Imail box incase something went wrong. Of course they do specify that in the migration tool doc, but I don't always read those:)
