This almost looks like an effort by Ipswitch to design a product with pre-mature obsolescence so that they can get people to buy multiple servers. Even the thread limit itself is not a practical limit, and combined with keeping connections open for hours, that can kill a server on a volume of only about 150,000 messages a day.
Adding most any gateway in front of IMail will resolve this problem. I have ORF from VamSoft running on top of MS SMTP on the same server which resolves this issue for me since MS SMTP can be configured to drop connections after a period of inactivity (I configured mine for 1 minute). I went from having as many as 50 open threads to under 10 at almost all times, and of course nothing older than 1 minute.
If Ipswitch didn't intend for this to be a revenue generator for them, they need to fix their damn software because keeping a thread open for multiple hours when you only have about 60 of them is just stupid. They also have other forms of forced obsolescence such as limiting the number of entries in their mail relay settings to 100, which limits one's ability to gateway.

We are running iMail 8.14 on Windows 2003. We have been experiencing problems with what Ipswitch Support tells us is the result of "too many" SMTP connections. Though the server is not overly busy, clients are frequently experiencing delays or timeouts when they try to send messages. We are being told that this is a known "limitation" of iMail; it can't handle more that 55 or so simultaneous SMTP connections. Seems hard to believe that iMail is advertised as "unlimited" and can't handle more than 55 connections. But all of my testing has been consistent with this; connection is real slow when the number gets over 45 or so.
Anyway, we are looking for a product to set up that clients can use as their SMTP Server instead of the current POP3 iMail server. At least as a workaround until iMail fixes this or we split the load to 2 iMail servers, or replace iMail if we have to. Can anyone recommend a product for this purpose? It has to be able to perform SMTP Authentication, obviously - and we will need a way to synch the account/password used in iMail, run on Windows and be fairly easy to get up and running. I've read in the archives that it can be done with the Microsoft SMTP Server that's included in IIS, but I can't see how to import all the users/passwords. It appears like all the users would have to be created as Windows users. Does anyone know how to synchronize the users with iMail? Or have a different solution to recommend?
Appreciate any and all help.
