First of all, you should not be using one hard drive period.
Second, you should be using some sort of Raid in case one hard drive fails.

Since hard drives are cheap insurance to a point, minimum configuration is 2
hard drives mirrored.

Better is 4 hard drives mirrored in 2 sets.
