A message failed the Mail From test. I am confused by the response. Is it referring to SMTP Authentication?
20050222 095547 127.0.0.1 SMTPD (47ec00ac014c9540) [00000772] <mail.robinsonmfg.com> VALIDATION: (MAIL FROM) mail.robinsonmfg.com FAILED SMTP server error: 530 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, Postmaster must first authenticate
I've seen this message a few times on IMGate MXs. The first time was just like you, "huh?" "authenticate?"
IMgate/postfix SAV also probes the envelope sender's MX with envelope from postmaster. The problem was that the probed destination MX was refusing ALL mail from postmaster, so our SAV failed.
My test was to telnet:25 from IMGate to the probed MX, using different envelope senders. All senders were accepted, except postmaster, and meaning they weren't rejecting 1) IMGate's IP nor 2) IMGate's sender domain, only from postmaster.
(One earlier thought was the remote MX was SAVing our sender from: [EMAIL PROTECTED] , and that we had not listed [EMAIL PROTECTED] as legit, causing THEIR SAV probe to fail to "authenticate" OUR [EMAIL PROTECTED] But envelope [EMAIL PROTECTED] was accepted by our IMGate (and they weren't SAV us anyway).)

Ah, programmers, gotta love 'em. The remote MX spews canned, misleading text of "Postmaster must first authenticate", and then Imail's error msg is equally misleading. result: Imail admin confused.
Imail should say no more than what it knows to be minimally true: "MAIL FROM: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> failed verification"
... without misleading about the sender not existing (which cannot be concluded from the probed MX's reject text).
If the probed MX did not exist/respond (forged, or DNS failure), the text should be something like:
"MAIL FROM: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> not verifiable" followed by the remote MX's entire reject msg.
MXs that reject mail from postmaster as anti-spam are screwed up, so I don't change the IMGate SAV sender from postmaster to accommodate one screwed up MX.
