Aside from the customer service perspective, you hit on something else very
important: Road use. Many of our customers are constantly on the go, so
sending outbound through our servers keeps them from having to change their
outgoing SMTP server every time they settle in to a new location.

There's also the benefit of using SPF to eliminate spoofed mail from
customer domains. We receive a lot of spam with forged addresses from the
customer's domain. Using SPF we can say that mail from a particular
customer domain should only come from our servers. That not only serves to
block all forging mail (spam and virus) from customer domains for us, but
also for all other mail servers that check SPF. So, we eliminate forged
mail from our customer's domains for us _and_ everyone else who checks SPF.
If everyone did this there would be no more forged mail.

Darin.

servers

Just curious, why not let your clients send email throught their own ISP's?
This save you bandwidth, processing, etc...

Two reasons for me: less technical support and more control.

It is a lot easier to give client one set of instructions. It doesn't make
any difference if they are on the road or setting up a machine at home or
the office - the instructions are the same. When I was having clients go
through their own ISP, I was constantly dealing with tech support issues
having to do with their ISP. Now I could have just said, "it's not my
problem, call your ISP", but I don't like to do things that way.

Even though it cost me bandwidth, I also like keeping on top of what my
clients are doing. This way, if one of them gets infected with a mass-mail
virus, I can be proactive and get them sorted out for example.
