I also have a support incident open on this issue. My reply so far from
ipswitch has been and I quote:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not able to duplicate this problem using Outlook Express 6 for Windows
(unfortunately, I have no Macintosh machines with which to test). Are the
users experiencing issues entering their <domain.com> information with the
same case as the Official Host Name and Host Alias information setup in
IMail? Are you using an external database for this domain?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

For what its worth, it seems newer macs are not showing this problem based
on user reports. It appears that the older ones that required
<user>%<domain.com> as the username are failing. One Mac producing the
problem has OS9 with Outlook Express 5, another had OS9 with Entourage 2001.

The domain alias CASE issue the response refers to is unrelated to Mac's it
seems but may apply in your case. From what I have seen though that would
show an auth failure on <user>@<example.com>@<your.iphost.name.com> rather
than the AUTH failure on your main Iped domain.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Imail 8.2 and Mac clients

FYI, we are in the process of restoring our Imail installation to its
8.15 state. We have found that none of our clients using Macs are able to
authenticate at all. Every one is being auth'ed as
[EMAIL PROTECTED], which is our OHN. The one client that is being
authed correctly as [EMAIL PROTECTED] is on an IP'ed host, and his auth is
also failing. I have sent a message to Ipswitch support, but we can't wait
and have to restore to get our clients back up and running.
