Subject: Re[2]: [IMail Forum] Multiple email domains & Windows NT Database
Not only can you do this for multiple domains, but also for as many virtual hosts as you want, where no IP address is available.
Uh, this is not "integrating with Active Directory" -- it's an answer to a totally different question.
One can use the ODBC userbase option in a variety of situations. It is well-documented and generally works as advertised.
If you are really keen you can write ASP or CF code to access the LDAP, but you lose a lot of flexibility.
Using an existing directory as the directory service for directory-enabled applications is the best practice. It goes without saying that standalone SQL back ends are endlessly flexible; however, they are not the best fit when integration is the goal.
Furthermore, true primary/secondary failover would not be possible with SQL unless one's SQL servers were clustered, a considerable expense, or if all user management interfaces used "two-phase commit." Having primary and secondary servers as DCs in the same AD domain, however, provides built-in and robust userbase replication.
