I think you misread what Tripp had said. To add desired functions/features apparently requires re-writing the SMTPD service. During that rewrite, some or part of the desired functions/features became available. Instead of waiting to allow us to use all of the function/feature being planned which would not be until the next version/upgrade, they decided to allow us to have a part of that function/feature.
