Strangely, I'm not sure this message got through,
precisely because of the problem it describes. So I'll repeat it and watch
for it. Sorry if you see this twice.

Subject: [IMail Forum] stack connect fail tracing Hi,
We had a problem with the "stack connect fail"
error recently. This is, according to the archives, related to being
unable to resolve the domain name for SMTP delivery of messages. Our IMail
server (running 7.15) uses our own DNS server as its primary server. It
also has listed a secondary DNS server (these are listed by IP address in the
services/SMTP tab) for an upstream ISP. I'm trying to track down why this
problem is occuring, or the extent to which it is "normal".
I rebooted our DNS server, even though the event
log showed no problems, and I added some new (and hopefully more responsive)
additional DNS servers to the IMail/SMTP setting. The number of connect
fails has gone down from every few minutes (as it was yesterday) to once every
twenty minutes or so. My questions are:
1. Is this a reasonable number?
2. How do I trace where the IP resolution
fails?
3. Does IMail use all of the DNS servers for which
it is configured, or only some?
Any advice would be helpful. We've been
thinking about replacing our DNS server, but we're a pretty small operation and
I'm not sure that that server is really all that busy.
Thanks,
Ben Bednarz
