Note, though, such checks are restricted by the delay between POP checks. You have to cut down the delay to whatever your margin of error will be in reporting, i.e. if you set the check to pop the target mailbox every 5 seconds, your lowest reported round-trip time will be 5 seconds. This restriction would be eliminated by following Ed's guidelines, which have the mark of coolness. It certainly is possible to make the connectivity/roundtrip measurements you describe.
