This makes even less sense. UW imapd is a full IMAP4rev1 server. I have no idea what Evolution may mean by "IMAP mode" as opposed to IMAP4rev1. The IMAP4 (RFC 1730) support was removed quite some time ago and no client should use it. The IMAP2 (RFC 1176) support still exists, for the benefit of people using ancient versions of Pine (3.xx).

I doubt very much that Evolution uses the RFC 1176 FIND command.
