Hi -

The current distribution doesn't support files greater than 2GB, although some people have made a start at hacking it to do so.

At least one beleaguered system manager has asked me NOT to support large files because of the escalating costs of backing up godzillaboxes owned by people who never clean their mailboxes...not to mention the cost of opening godzillaboxes, especially with traditional UNIX format.

That's a problem with Trash and spam mailboxes -- "out of sight, out of mind." I especially have nothing good to say about Trash mailboxes, or those individuals who think that using such with IMAP is a good idea.

Anyway, the solution (at least until people start emailing 2GB+ godzillagrams) for handling large mailboxes is to deploy mix format. This dramatically lowers both the backup and open costs. It doesn't do anything about people who never clean up, but that's an administrative rather than a technical problem.
