Mark,
Outlook & Thunderbird don't put the quota info in the user's face but
if the server supports Quota and the user looks at the "properties"
of a mailbox, the quota info is displayed there.
I don't know for sure but given how often those two clients do quota
checking, I'm guessing they also check for avalable space before doing
mailbox update (append) ops.
