Can you verify that the NIS setup is working? For example, are you able
to rsh, telnet, ssh, or login at the console using NIS authentication?

If you really can afford plain text passwords, then perhaps do your tests
with a telnet to the IMAP port (143 unless you've changed it).

Judging by your quote from the syslog I'd say your pine test is working
though.
