FWIW, imapd.c has code inside its "main idle loop" to burp out a
message every 2 minutes explicltly to deal with this problem.
A NAT box that cannot even remember a connection for 2 minutes is
pretty lame (or overstressed).
Can you tweak the configs on your NAT box to extend its idle timer?
(or replace it with a better NAX box ;).
Other possibility would be to hack your imapd's source to increase
its "burp the NAT baby" frequency.
