That's probably overkill.

And won't work, either.

Each IMAP session is a separate process; there is no central mechanism to "bring up". What's more, the burp will only happen when there is one (and only one) session open on that mailbox; thus having the Ethernet disconnected will do no good since there won't be any sessions!

I would think that killing only those imapd
processes owned by the particular user, followed by any kind of
read/write opening of the mailbox should burp it.

Yes, for mix format. Opening the mailbox in Alpine and then closing it should also do the trick.

mbx format is a bit more complicated, but hopefully people are moving away from mbx.

Nobody should be using traditional UNIX format (mbox format) for a mailbox that is accessed by a BlackBerry.

I think even something as benign as a "mailutil check" would do the trick.

Nope, because "mailutil check" is readonly.

Try the imapd patch that I posted to the list a few weeks ago. It's a crude hack, but it ought to work.

I did a somewhat better patch in my server; it only does the hack when the client is a BlackBerry. It definitely works for my BlackBerry.

The real solution is more work. I've worked out what needs to be done, and will get around to it when I have some spare time (hah!). It's too complex to be a patch for UW IMAP though.
