That error message indicates that your copy of mailutil was not built with
maildir support. You need to get a third-party module to add maildir
support. The standard distribution does not include it.
Beyond that bit of information, you're on your own. mbox format sucks,
but maildir sucks worse.

I've been through the source for imap-2007e to find the error message,
which is in osdep/unix/dummy.c but it doesn't seem to get any clearer.
I'm not quite sure what's going on when the failure occurs.
