We have some mix format mailboxes that need to be available for reference
purposes. They will no longer be used as mailboxes - they just have to be
available as a local folder store.

If you don't have to preserve them in the *exact* format for legal
reasons, why not just convert them to some other format that's easier for
more clients to parse?  Assuming the folder is not larger than 2 GiB, you
could convert it to standard mbox format.  Use the "mailutil" program that
comes with imapd.

If the folder is larger than 2 GiB, you'll need to stick with MIX.

Is it possible to access mix mailboxes this way or can they only be read via
imap? We're looking for something that is like opening an mbox file using
Local Folders on Thunderbird.

pine or alpine could do that.
