I'd suggest to add is a config option, much like
  CREATEPROTO=mbxproto

It shouldn't be the default so it would not break anything.

But it's very hard not to have dual-use mailboxes because that's a real life
and users can't differentiate between a folder where they can't store mails,
because on the system it's a directory, and normal folders.

I don't really know the imap protocoll very well, I just need an imap server
as a sys-admin. So please be so kind and elaborate a bit why dual-use mailboxes
make life harder for imap complient clients.

Just my 2 euro cents.
