Among freeware servers:

Cyrus is an excellent implementation. There are a couple of minor issues in
Cyrus (as I recall something having to do with RENAME not being atomic) but
nothing that affects people in real life. The only major interoperability
issue involving Cyrus was fixed long ago.

UW is also an excellent implementation (of course I'd say that!), and is the
reference implementation.

The book "Managing IMAP", by Dianna Mullet & Kevin Mullet, published by
O'Reilly, ISBN 0-596-00012-X, contains an excellent comparison between UW and
Cyrus. There is remarkably little overlap between the target communities of
the two servers, so it's a good idea to read this book and determine which
community you fall into.

I prefer not to compare commercial servers, mostly because much of my
experience with these have been in dealing with their bugs. I do not have
sufficient knowledge of current status to make an intelligent (or fair!)
comparison. I know that some servers are vastly improved from early versions.

I recommend that if you go with a commercial server, you should pick a vendor
that is an active participant in this forum.
