Instead of "pop-before-smtp" you should see about smtp-authentication.
For that you will likely need:
- newer sendmail
- SSL certificate for your machine
- plain-text login under SSL wrapper
(hashed passwords in database do require plaintext logins..)

Likely you want to use cyrus-sasl tools.
