You can pipeline FETCH or STORE commands; that is, you can send multiple commands at a time. If untagged EXPUNGE responses were allowed, then the sequence numbers would be invalidated in the middle of pipelined set of operations when an untagged EXPUNGE happens, and the wrong message(s) would be FETCHed or STOREd.
