I am having trouble getting authenticated using imap or pop.  I have a RedHat 7.2 install which is up2date with the latest fixes.  I did a make of imap with the 'lrh' system.  I did a 'make' using the default settings and then I did a make without SSL (thinking that my problem was with SSL).

When I use either Netscape, Outlook 2000 or Outlook express with SSL, it looks as though the certificate is accepted (I can view it), but then fails on username password.  I confirmed this by doing the 'make' without SSL and attempted to telnet to port 110.  After entering the USER and the PASS word I received a response BAD login.

In the 'messages' log I get:
    Login failed user=john auth=john host=champ[127.0.0.1]

in the maillog I get
pop3s (or imaps) SSL service int from 10.222.1.222
Command stream end of file while reading line user=john host=[10.222.1.222]

It seems to me that pop3 and imap are not able to authenticate with my /etc/passwd file (I can still login with the same user and password).

One word of note... when I installed this version of redhat I selected the options Enable MD5 passwords adn Enable shadow passwords... which was a default during the 'Authentication Configuration' screen of 7.2 setup.

Thanks.
