It gets more complicated when using multiple clients. I don't want all mailboxes to show up as "contains new mail" when I get home and have read the mails elsewhere. If you also send notifications for "some client selected mailbox xyz", that could be used to reset the "contains new mail" flag. I think that would make it pretty much usable.
