Although I agree that rejection based on lack of protocol adherence is a good thing, it's too easy to assume spammers can't get the format of their emails right. If fixing the message format can make them get 2/10000 instead of 1/10000 views, then they'll do it. In this particular case, I think the IMAP server should show the ID if it can, otherwise it should just go NIL. Since it's garbage in, nobody can complain if the server shows garbage to the user.
