I wasn't arguing that strict protocol adherence filters away spam. I was arguing that the mail loss caused by strict protocol adherence is mostly spam, so the costs are small.


In this particular case, I think the IMAP server should show the ID if it can, otherwise it should just go NIL. Since it's garbage in, nobody can complain if the server shows garbage to the user.

The OE users whose MUA falls over can complain. Fairly? Perhaps not.
