If LIST does not inform the client that the name exists, then the client may attempt a CREATE command that will not succeed, and in turn be unable to proceed. There is no status code that says "can not create this mailbox because this name is already a directory" or "can not create this directory because it already exists as a directory". -- Mark -- http://staff.washington.edu/mrc Science does not emerge from voting, party politics, or public debate.
