Any change to the RECENT count is noted with a new untagged RECENT count.
This is something that is clarified in the RFC 3501 errata.

For a count of other message status (seen, deleted, flagged, answered,
draft), you need to do a SEARCH.

EXPUNGE of a recent message would send a new untagged RECENT.
