I guess that means I've just broken rule #1 - I volunteered. :-)

?? Way back in 1992 or 1993 I asked John Klensin if I could take part
in the SMTP working group and was told that it was by invitation only.
Since then I've always assumed that the IETF was a closed shop and
that I was being excluded from it either because of some position I had
taken or because I was considered unqualified in some way.

Certainly I was never able to take part in the EMC, even though I would
have loved to do so, simply because they wanted US$10,000 from me
to participate, and I've *never* had that level of resourcing.

Shame really - I believe I could probably have contributed a certain
amount in quite a wide range of areas, and if there's one thing that
really *sucks* about being a specialized developer in a country like New
Zealand, it's the almost total absence of peer-group. Working in
isolation really just isn't fun.

OK, although I'd probably want to make it a little broader and cover
areas like "Why LIST "" "*" is considered bad practice". Perhaps a
broader informational document on issues associated with the LIST
command?

I can't absolutely guarantee that this will happen rapidly - I'm currently
heavily involved with the group that "runs" the Internet in my own
country (New Zealand) and am finding that my hours are being sucked
away by national anti-spam initiatives... Add to that the fact that I'm
maintaining both a client and a multi-protocol server, doing all the
accounts, writing the manuals and generally chasing my tail, and there
isn't a whole lot of time left... But I think this is important and I'd like to
give something back as kind of a repayment for everyone on this list
who has helped me so willingly over the last five years, so I'll try to fit it
into the next couple of weeks if I possibly can.

If any of you have pet topics in the LIST realm that you would like to see
in this document, please pass them on. I'll aim to put together a rough
first draft and circulate it here for (undoubtedly) extensive comment and
wrangling. <g>

Cheers!
