I think that this discussion indicates that at the very least some documented clarification is required...
While we are on the subject of clarification, I am moved to suggest one other related area where I think some clarification would be beneficial. That is to specify the minimum requirements for a mailstore to be suitable for use with an IMAP server. I have not come across any discussion of this matter and, it seems, one must infer the necessaries from the details of the protocol. And even then some issues, notably what may and may not be present in the hierarchy, are far from evident.
Some relevant pieces of information are present in RFC 2683 (IMAP4 Implementation Recommendations) and these could be referenced.
Any thoughts?
