The IMAP specification only states that STORE will create keywords; it does not state that COPY and APPEND will do so.

Consequently, if the destination mailbox does not have the $Forwarded keyword created, APPEND of a message with that keyword may not work.

On top of that, some older versions of certain servers may not do COPY or APPEND of keywords right even if they are defined in the destination mailbox. This is because, until a few years ago, few people used keywords and the feature was not extensively tested.
