I think the reject in question is "reject_unknown_hostname" which requires 
the valid, fqdn HELO hostname to have an A record or MX record, nothing to 
do with a PTR record.

... that is totally different, and simply a reject because the recipient 
was unknown at that MX.

yep, that's reject_unknown_hostname (nothing to do with PTR and nothing to 
do with unknown recipient)
