You can press SHIFT+DELETE, that will delete
the message and move to the next.
Though I wish this would be configurable as the default:)

The ticket seems to be for something different than my requirement.
No, it isn't. It is a way to map different clicks/key combinations to
actions. That's exactly what you asked for - you want to change the
default action after deleting (i.e. deleting should act like
"SHIFT-DELETE" rather than "DELETE").
